A Year of Running + Gardening |
2010: In the grips of a Quarterlife crisis, I'm striving to both commit and find meaning through training for a marathon and becoming a first time gardener. 2011: Second marathon. Second (dead) garden. Higher stakes. 2012: Half-marathoning? Gardening is unlikely Have I bitten off more than I can chew? Probably. Only time will tell. |
Baby’s First Sewing Project: Here it is. You didn’t know it existed or that I was even working on it, but I made a dress.
I dragged the BF to the fabric store following the most ridiculous Minnesota snowstorm that the state has seen in recent years. I was terrified to undertake this project, but fortunately I had great help from the staff at Treadle Yard Goods in St. Paul.
After purchasing everything I needed, I worked on the pattern and cut out a mock one on muslin. After sewing it together, I realized it looked like a potato sack so I had to alter it significantly and ended up adjusting the pattern to be a size small on top, large waist, and medium at the hips. For those keeping track at home, it means that my “curves” are not, in fact, curves at all.
After that, I sweated bullets while cutting the real fabric and sewing the real fabric.
I did a dance after I sewed the sleeves on.
I felt great accomplishment when I figured out how to use the zipper foot attachment on my sewing machine and did a respectable job sewing in the invisible zipper with the lining and all.
I beamed as a tried on the dress before hemming or finishing the neckline.
It’s not perfect, but I’m smitten.
