A Year of Running + Gardening |
2010: In the grips of a Quarterlife crisis, I'm striving to both commit and find meaning through training for a marathon and becoming a first time gardener. 2011: Second marathon. Second (dead) garden. Higher stakes. 2012: Half-marathoning? Gardening is unlikely Have I bitten off more than I can chew? Probably. Only time will tell. |
My first half-marathon is now behind me. I’ve been fighting a gnarly cold so it wasn’t easy. Additionally, I didn’t train properly. For perspective, my half time for the marathon in June was faster. That’s saying something.
It was a fun race as the weather was beautiful and I got to spend most of the race running with Maria. It was also amazing because the marathoner’s course overlapped ours from mile 8 or so through to the finish. This means that I was passed by the guy who won the marathon in 2:14:20. To see an individual run that fast is nothing but amazing. If you’d like to learn more about Saturday’s race, The Des Moines Register did a nice piece on many of the elite runners.
Yesterday, amongst all the excitement and even during the run, I thought to myself, “I have to do one of these again.”
